Wave Phenomena

(2018 –      )

You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.
— Henry David Thoreau

This series of images is an exploration of mindfulness practice and visual abstraction. An earlier working title for the series was A Record of the Waves. There are images in the series that record actual waves in motion, but the majority of the images are of sand after the water’s action has stopped. I like to think of these as the waves drawing self-portraits that persist only until the next tide comes in and the process starts again.

All of the images in the series were captured using a smartphone and are presented without any post-processing. What was captured in the moment is what you see. The entire series was photographed at a two-mile stretch of beach that is bordered on either end by a river. I walk this beach often and am always surprised by the changes the tidal action leaves behind on the sand. It is through slowing down and paying close attention that one can observe the details of the ever changing patterns.
